Aakash is the world's cheapest touch-screen tablet computer, the original prototype named Sakshat was unveiled in 2009 in India, as a "$10 laptop". A new prototype, costing $35 after government subsidy, was unveiled in 2010. The device is formally launched on 5 October 2011 as Aakash, made by the UK-based company DataWind. Initially, the device will be sold to the Government of India at $50 and after government subsidy it will be available to students at price of 34$.
The company says it will also offer a commercial version of the tablet, called UbiSlate 7. It is expected to hit the shelves later this year, retailing for about $60.
